Clean Green

It has been said that with distance comes clarity and focus. Without leaving the planet, our client has traveled one of the greatest distances from our shop that a person can manage: Australia. A total of 9,000 miles and up to two years’ time lie between him and his car, the infamous Green Hell project. IND has been tasked with the responsibility of storing and maintaining Green Hell while it’s owner is taking advantage of the opportunity of a lifetime in the land Down Under. We are honored and fortunate to be able to take care of such an iconic creation.

With this responsibility came also the opportunity to perform a bit of cosmetic adjustment. Because Green Hell is in a somewhat permanent storage, IND is able to make changes to the car at will and add components from our in stock inventory. Not only were we given free reign to change a few major components, these modifications were carried out without our client’s specific knowledge of which parts were installed. You are discovering our changes at the very same moment he is!

With alacrity and excitement we set to work. It quickly became apparent that a streamlined yet functional approach was essential, and with that focal point in mind, we realized only one rear wing could replace the recognizably massive M24 unit, and that was RKP’s lightweight carbon fiber GTS wing painted in a matte black finish. Carefully paired with this on the front end is an RKP GT4 front lip, also laid in highly polished bare carbon fiber. To finish off the appearance, a set of Volk Racing TE37 SL wheels in the pressed graphite finish and color-matched green decals were installed.

The finished effect is a noticeable and striking study in contrast. While Green Hell still screams aggression, both visually and aurally, the lines and extensions seem to be pulled back into a taut, poised creature with intent to strike. Motorsport and competition still dominate the thematic structure, however tasteful restraint is quite obviously the order of the day. Something about the way the M3 squats over the TE37 SLs and hugs the ground with its new carbon aero components inspires a picture of speed and competence. Every one of us is overcome with pride, and while the internals remain intact for now, something tells us we have not seen the last of this car’s never-ending evolution.

And so, the latest and greatest incarnation of Green Hell prowls our facility with an intimidating facade and yet graceful presence that serves as a daily, constant reminder of how clean and perfect a race-inspired build can become. With every glance, every encounter, the familiar burning pride and passion is renewed within all of us. While regrettably we cannot present the new Green Hell in person to our client (or use the car in an on-track environment without his presence), the knowledge that his original vision lives on to be enjoyed by enthusiasts around the world gives us great contentment. We are humbled and grateful to be granted the privilege of bringing you a cleaner Green.

Meow Power!

Meow Power

The E86 Z4M seen in these photos is not Kristin’s first attempt at modifying a car, and it shows. Kristin is a long-standing and well respected member of Chicago’s modified car community so she wasted no time with her new Z4 when she got rid of her extensively modified Hyundai Tiburon in favor of one of BMW’s most interactive M cars.

Although this Z4M is in it’s very early stages of modification and will remain a constant work in progress, Kristin was able to work with IND to give the car a striking appearance by adding just a few components. We knew that an aggressive stance was a critical aspect of this car’s personality- a project like this begins by examining the stance and wheel fitment and expounds thematically from that starting point.

The car’s aggressive fitment is achieved by using Work VS-XX wheels in an 18×9.5 +19 front size, and an 18×10.5 +19 size in the rear. These sizes and offsets leave very little room for error both in terms of inside and outside clearance and had to be carefully planned and accounted for months before the wheel’s arrival at IND. Our careful measurement paid off during the ultimate moment of truth.

We opened the Work wheel boxes the moment they were unloaded from their UPS truck like excited kids on Christmas day, and immediately jumped to the task of test fitting the wheels. Any of our readers who have pursued close wheel fitment before will know the “make it or break it” feeling of this moment. We all grinned simultaneously when we saw that the wheel fitment was literally perfect- the front and rear wheels cleared with just enough room to spare!

IND installed KW ClubSport coilovers to give the car the camber and ride height adjustment it needed. The VS-XX wheels were shod with Yokohama Advan tires, and the front fenders and rear quarters were carefully rolled to accommodate the aggressive wheels. Kristin added an Arkym front lip and rear trunk spoiler, both painted by IND, to enhance the car’s sleek and low appearance. Gloss black grilles and painted reflectors round out the basic accents on this Z4M. Kristin has wasted no time and is also patiently waiting for an Eisenmann exhaust system to be hand built and imported from it’s Stuttgart manufacturing facility.

Although this car’s mild state of modification will not last long, Kristin has once again proved that simple modifications can completely transform the personality of a car. Please stay tuned as Kristin continues to build her version of the perfect Z4M!

Renovated the IND Headquarters!

Back in April we published Brick by Brick, a declaration of war on our very own shop. After 30 years of use the end goal was to give back to the structure that helped bring all of our ideas to fruition. Beginning with the service entrance and main office we wanted to provide a clean, modern, and above all calm environment to our customers. As car enthusiasts all of us understand the attachment of a owner to his or her vehicle and in the context of renovation we wanted ensure the both clients were equally comfortable. This week we have completed the remodeling phase of our shop’s second office and are very proud of the result. We hope our clients and visitors love it also!

Step by Step

By now most M3 enthusiasts have seen SehrSchnell’s journeys to IND and have watched his car grow up step by step. Last week Philip took yet another step in this M3’s progression with yet another trip to IND accompanying it. Philip and I knew that of all of the parts added to his M3, the KW Variant 3 coilovers and OMP ARS fixed back seats would contribute to some of the biggest change in the car’s personality.

The OMP seats were a perfect compliment to the other components installed this round- a stud conversion by Turner Motorsports, Project Kics lug nuts, Macht Schnell 12mm spacers in the front, KW Variant 3 coilovers, and an Akrapovic exhaust with carbon tips. Philip’s M3 now has a more purposeful stance and appearance, along with a level of interactive feel that only a fixed back sports seat can give. See you next time Philip!

Presenting the 3D Design BMW F10 M5

As BMW and more specifically the M division continue to refine their product, the skill level required in the enhancement of the automobile manufacturers end result grows almost exponentially. Albeit suspension or engine tuning, long gone are the days of “winging it” in the aftermarket industry. The passion required to create and produce components for these modern machines must equal or surpass that of the originator.

3D Design is no stranger to this process and once again has managed to embellish what many believe is the most exciting mid-size the engineers in Munich have released since the boisterous E39 M5. The 3D Design program for the F10 M5 features a robust line of carbon fiber aerodynamic accessories including a front lip, low splitters, side skirts, rear diffuser, and trunk spoiler. In addition to these pieces the roof spoiler from their existing F10 line will also be compatible.

The F10 M5 line will not stop at the aerodynamic portion of the brand. 3D Design will have their trademark exhaust system developed with Arqray as a technology partner. Currently the exhaust will be made available in stainless steel with quad 100mm tips providing a aggressiveness that suits the elegance of their rear diffuser. The exhaust will be made available in both a JASMA spec as well as Export spec.

The goal of 3D Design is not to hit a couple areas really well. As a entity consumed by perfection the purpose of every vehicle is to have the most comprehensive program for the given chassis. No exceptions were made for the F10 M5. In working with their technology partner Ohlins for suspension components 3D Design will have a full suspension line and is working on a external reservoir race application. The already luxurious interior of the M5 will be further enhanced by 3D Designs trademark pedal set, floor mats, and a gauge pod for more serious applications.

Although 3D Design suspension is exclusive to the Japanese domestic market, it is our top priority to bring these applications to North America and plan to do so with the F10 M5 application. All items will be ready to ship mid May and pre-orders will be taken effective immediately.

Sweating the small stuff

The phrase “God is in the detail” has grown in relevance in my own life since the day we began developing IND many years ago. I’ve realized that when modifying a car, you are not merely adding parts, you are developing the details.

The owner of this E70 X5 35d is someone who understands that any car starts as a blank canvas and is not truly complete without these details. Although this X5 is not intended to compete with it’s M brothers our client added some key touches to make the truck truly his own.

IND braved some new ground to perfect this X5. As this is a performance diesel engine we knew a gauge package would be an important tool. Because there is no off the shelf gauge solution for the X5, every step of the process involved custom work. A gauge pod was fabricated from sheet metal to fit perfectly in place of the ash tray, and finished in a high gloss black to integrate seamlessly into the interior. On the engine side a custom fitting was fabricated to interface with the Exhaust Gas Temperature probe, a barbed fitting was integrated into the car’s piping for a boost pressure reading, and an oil temperature sending unit was installed in the car’s oil system.

The complete interior trim was removed and refinished in Ferrari’s Grigio Silverstone color, accented by a stripe of the car’s original silver trim to integrate the new color scheme into the existing door pulls and shifter surround of the car. The 35d’s green nature was something we felt we had to acknowledge, and we did so by adding our IND logo in a bright green color.

The exterior of the car was kept simple by again only changing details where it was critical. The wheels are finished in the beautiful Grigio Silverstone color, while black and green logos were added in place of the original chrome badges. Even the X5 logo on the trunk was changed from the original large badge to a smaller more elegantly sized X5 badge from the X5M. X5 V8 exhaust tips were retrofitted and powdercoated black to give the rear of the car a more sporting appearance.

Our finished product is something all of us at IND and the owner of this car can be proud of. This X5 is one that may pass for a factory original car to the untrained observer, but to the initiated it is a car that represents a tasteful sense of restraint and an appreciation that nothing is complete without it’s details.

Enjoy the photos!
